The strongest precipitation and atmospheric discharges cause clouds called cumulonimbus, and therefore whirling. How to get to know them? They have several distinctive features that everyone can identify. First of all, they are dense and dark, but this is not always a sufficient criterion to distinguish them. Not every cumulonimbus brings a storm. This is usually evidenced by the shape of the cloud – stormy cumulonimbus is the so-called „cloud anvil” (also known as „incus”) and this is not an accidental term.

Which clouds bring rain? How to recognize them

Such a cloud has a shape reminiscent of an anvil, hence a broad base and narrowing in the middle. Sometimes the cloud takes on a form similar to a mushroom, so in the lower part the narrowed part does not expand. However, not only cumulonimbus brings precipitation. This „ability” also has several other types of clouds.

The constant rainfall brings nimbostratus, which is characterized by the fact that … just the sky is gray. Precipitation of this type of cloud is usually not very strong, but it is permanent. Stratus is a little brighter, which brings a similar effect, but in this case we are dealing with drizzle rather than granular snow in winter.

Stratocumulus can be recognized by the fact that it is not a homogeneous structure, rather it consists of something like lobes or bubbles. This type of cloud brings a small rainfall, which often takes the form of „virgi”, meaning rain or snow, which does not reach the surface of the Earth, because it evaporates at higher altitudes.

Sometimes we see the sun in the sky, but it is as if it is foggy. This usually means altostratusa, a cloud that has a bluish or gray layer through which the sun’s rays are able to penetrate. Precipitation from such a cloud is possible, but it is usually small.
Clouds that look vertical are cumulus. Not all of them are able to generate precipitation, such capacity has cumulus congestus. However, it is not a strong rain, usually a passing rain, which quickly passes, along with the movement of the cloud, which is „high”, but not very impressive with its remaining dimensions.

In summary, cumulonimbuses resembling the construction of an anvil are the most dangerous for us. At the sight of such a cloud, go to a room or vehicle equipped with a lightning rod.
