How clouds are formed

Clouds arise when the humid air cools down enough for the water vapor to condense or turn into ice crystals. The ceiling on which this happens depends on the humidity of the air and the speed at which the temperature drops with altitude.

As a rule, steam may condense at condensation nuclei – tiny particles that serve as the basis for droplets.


What are clouds made of

The sun’s rays heat water in seas and oceans, which travels upward in the form of water vapor in a process called evaporation. As the steam increases, it cools down and turns back into water or ice. In this way, clusters of water droplets or ice crystals are formed called clouds and there are different types of clouds.


How are clouds made

Water vapor originating mainly from the seas and oceans is ubiquitous in the atmosphere. Its quantity contained in the unit of air volume is called the absolute humidity of air. The higher the air temperature, the more water vapor it can contain. When the air contains the maximum amount of water vapor at a given temperature, we say it is saturated and its relative humidity is 100 percent.

The temperature at which the water vapor currently in the air would saturate it is called the dew point. Condensation, ie the exchange of water vapor into a liquid, takes place when the air temperature drops to or below the dew point. Sometimes, a direct transition from a gas state to a permanent or resublimation occurs.

But the temperature drop is not the only condensation condition. The condensation does not occur in absolutely clean air, even with high saturation. We need microscopic particles suspended in the air and called condensation nuclei, on which even finer condensation products settle.
